MSS- Dog-Gone It by TobiObito4ever MSS- Dog-Gone It by TobiObito4ever
I actually wonder if volunteering at an animal shelter was such a good idea. The truth is, I actually get a little nervous around dogs. ^^; Because of a childhood incident involving a really nasty Rottweiler.

This is going to be a problem....

The nervous blonde girl (me) is mine

I'm actually afraid of those dogs who bark in a 'not so friendly way', or snap and bite, but other than that, I love dogs.

Dogs that are easily excitable startle me a bit, so I have to keep them from jumping on me. I also have to be pretty firm when it comes to dogs who think they own the place (like my dog gets sometimes).

Ah. But other than that, I'm fine with dogs.

I'm the same. I actually fear dogs, because I almost got bitten by a dog a year ago.

Nova, cats WILL attack and kill dogs at times, no matter what size.

why did you accept the work if you fear dogs

It's not so much a fear as just mild discomfort. I can tolerate dogs; I don't get terribly attached to them like I do with cats.

Never walk a medium or large size dog with a little dog leash.

My ex-boss was cheap like that and had me walk his dog when he was out of town.  There just wasn't enough time between when Lacie started tugging and when I tripped.  3 steps and I basically hit my jaw on the pavement hard.  It took me at least 90 seconds to see things again, but I didn't lose consciousness.  After that... I started attaching the old dog (that had passed away which was also a small leash for a big dog...) and doubled the leash length.  The dog was much happier being able to explore in fields, and I had enough leash for reaction time.

And I have more than just one bad dog incident in my past... childhood, high school.

They mentioned in the guidelines we have to buy our own leashes. (So I have a few things to pick up: small, medium and large leashes and "kennel shoes".)

The small leashes are more for show dogs or dogs with a real attitude problem with others...  just get a long one (or several) and you should be fine.  :)  After all, you can always make loops or knots to shorten them.

Good luck, though I don't think there's much to worry about. Dogs only act the way they've been trained to, and if the shelter is even remotely kind to their animals they'll be perfectly alright around you.

That and they say they isolate the nastier ones. Besides, if anything DOES happen, I'm supposed to tell the staff ASAP.
